Barton & Guestier: European Winery of the Year, Now in Kenya

B&G Châteauneuf-du-Pape bottle

In 2024, Wine Enthusiast named Barton & Guestier its European Winery of the Year at the 25th Wine Star Awards, one of the most closely watched honours in the wine world. The award recognised three centuries of quality and a house that keeps looking forward: lighter bottles, sustainable growers, and new wines like an alcohol-free sparkling.

The Wine Shop is the exclusive importer of Barton & Guestier in Kenya. That means the full range, from crisp Chablis to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, arrives in Nairobi straight from the source and is stored the way it should be. From Nairobi to Mombasa and Kisumu, and for hotels and restaurants across East Africa, this is where to find Bordeaux’s oldest wine house.

Three hundred years in Bordeaux

In 1725, an Irish merchant named Thomas Barton set up as a wine trader on the quays of Bordeaux. In 1802 his grandson Hugh joined forces with Daniel Guestier, and the name on every bottle was born. Along the way, the house counted Thomas Jefferson among its admirers. In 2025 Barton & Guestier celebrated 300 years, making it the oldest wine house in Bordeaux.

Today B&G is based at Château Magnol, a Cru Bourgeois estate just outside the city with France’s High Environmental Value certification. Its winemakers work with close to 200 sustainable growers across France’s great regions: Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône, the Loire, Provence and the Languedoc. That breadth is the house’s quiet strength. One cellar team, one standard, and a wine for almost every table and every budget.

It is also a house that refuses to stand still. B&G has moved to lighter bottles and recycled packaging, set itself a goal of environmental certification across all its wines, and launched alcohol-free sparkling wines for the growing number of people choosing to drink less. That mix of heritage and fresh thinking is exactly what Wine Enthusiast’s judges rewarded.

Bubbles

Bottle of B&G Crémant de Bordeaux

B&G Crémant de Bordeaux · KSh 4,095
Made the same way as Champagne, with a second fermentation in the bottle, at a fraction of the price. Sémillon and Cabernet Franc give fine, persistent bubbles, crisp apple and lemon, and a soft note of fresh brioche. Our pick for a toast that tastes far more expensive than it is.

B&G Premium Sparkling Rosé · KSh 2,895
Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah from the south of France. It smells of strawberries and raspberries, then fills the mouth with fresh cherry and forest fruit on a delicate, creamy mousse. Pure fun in a glass, and lovely with strawberry desserts.

B&G Premium Sparkling Chardonnay · KSh 2,695
Bright and dry, with green apple, citrus and a clean finish. The easy choice for a party, brunch or a tray of samosas.

B&G Sparkling Blanc de Blanc 0% · KSh 2,295
All the sparkle, none of the alcohol. Fine bubbles, apple and citrus, and a fresh, dry finish, so drivers and non-drinkers can raise a proper glass too.

White wines

Bottle of B&G Chablis

B&G Chablis · KSh 6,995
Pure Chardonnay from Burgundy’s northern tip, grown on limestone. Green apple, lemon zest and a flinty, almost salty edge, with a mouth-watering finish. Open it with oysters, grilled tilapia or prawns from the coast.

B&G Pouilly-Fuissé · KSh 7,695
The richer side of Burgundy Chardonnay. Ripe apple, white peach and citrus, rounded out by a gentle creaminess and a hint of toasted nuts. Made for roast chicken, lobster or a creamy fish curry.

B&G Bordeaux Blanc · KSh 3,495
Sauvignon Blanc brings zesty citrus and green apple; Sémillon adds a rounder, waxy texture. Fresh, elegant and perfect with grilled fish or a chicken salad on a hot afternoon.

Rosé

Bottle of B&G Côtes de Provence Rosé

B&G Côtes de Provence Rosé · KSh 3,795
Provence is the home of pale, dry rosé, and this one comes in a striking bottle inspired by the pink tourmaline gemstone. Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah give ripe red berries and white flowers, with real freshness right through the finish. Beautiful by the pool, or with grilled fish and Mediterranean salads.

B&G Passeport Rosé d’Anjou · KSh 2,695
From the Loire Valley, soft and smooth, with wild strawberry and cherry. A lovely match for Indian or Asian dishes and sushi.

Red wines

Bottle of B&G Châteauneuf-du-Pape

B&G Châteauneuf-du-Pape · KSh 8,895
The great name of the southern Rhône, where vines grow among large sun-baked stones. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre make a full, generous red: ripe red and black fruit, wild herbs, warm spice and a long, satisfying finish. Pour it with roast lamb, beef stew or game.

B&G Saint-Émilion · KSh 4,895
Right-bank Bordeaux led by Merlot. Plum and blackcurrant, a touch of cedar, and smooth, structured tannins. Classic with roast beef, duck or a cheese board.

B&G Passeport Médoc · KSh 3,695
From the highest vineyards of the Médoc, on Bordeaux’s left bank. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot give intense blackcurrant with vanilla and spice, and well-knit tannins. Built for steak.

B&G Côtes du Rhône · KSh 3,095
Violets, black cherry and blackcurrant with a twist of black pepper. Full, fruity and spicy, which makes it one of the best partners for spiced Kenyan dishes and red meat in sauce.

B&G Beaujolais Villages · KSh 3,295
100% Gamay: light on its feet, with black cherry, wild strawberry, fresh fig and a long liquorice finish. Serve it slightly cool with cold meats or grilled chicken.

Thomas Barton Réserve

Named after the founder, this is the house’s own selection of Bordeaux appellations.

Bottle of Thomas Barton Réserve Saint-Émilion

Thomas Barton Réserve Saint-Émilion · KSh 5,095
80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Strawberry, raspberry and cocoa on the nose, blackberry jam on the palate, soft tannins and a long, smooth finish. A treat with fillet of beef or dark chocolate.

Thomas Barton Réserve Médoc · KSh 4,495
Half Cabernet Sauvignon, half Merlot. Fresh, dense and silky, with black cherry, blueberry and hints of mint, black pepper and liquorice.

Thomas Barton Réserve Bordeaux Rouge · KSh 3,695
An explosion of ripe cherry and strawberry with mint and liquorice, smooth tannins and a long, fruity finish. Great with tomato pasta or roast chicken.
